I'm a navyBrat and have been since the moment I was born and I wrote this poem at the begining of the school year for a project when my Dad was down in the Gulf to help with the aftermath from Katrina.

Many people have preconcived notions
That we always get our way
Cause one of our parents are always away
But that's not how it is
Being a navybrat is like an endless hour glass
But the grains of sand are replaced
With hard deployments and long medcruises
Dads missing birthdays
And moms trying to be strong so the kids don't see her cry
Always waiting and praying for that phone to ring
And dad being on the other end
Lying with mom crying cause dad just called
He won't be home for another month
The wind howls almost as if it feels your pain
As you cry yourself to sleep
But then the day comes we all dream of...
Homecoming
We go to the base and watch the ship pull in
Surrounded by so much excitment you can't breathe
Seeing all the families with joyful tears in their eyes
From brand new mothers to old navy wives
And then he gets off the boat
And all time stands still
The joy is a feeling of flying through a never ending sky
As you rush to hug him
And catch him up on all he's missed
Then you hug him again
Cause you still can't believe he's back
You spend every moment with him
Because you know it will come again
When he has to go away
Then you'll sit home once again
Waiting, praying, crying
For him to come home to stay
