I am from a slow speakin' hillbilly family
A family who don't care about material things, just each other
I am from my Daddy's coal stained hands,
And his words that will forever linger in my mind- "Life's about doin' what you want."
From my Momma's fried chicken
And my Papaw's dumplins on Sunday
I am from flower pots made out of old tires
From where it's okay to have cars in your yard that don't run
I am from a small Baptist church up Whitman holler;
The one that sometimes gets too loud,
The one where I was taught about Jesus and love
I am from bare feet in the summer,
From swimming in the creek and catching lightning bugs
I am from climbing rock cliffs
From shooting guns and playing in the rain
I am from the coal fields of southern West Virginia
From a small town where everybody knows everybody
From mountains and sunshine
Beauty- winter, summer, spring, or fall
From this place that might as well be hidden from the rest of the world
I have learned lessons for life-
To love, laugh, and move on
A family who don't care about material things, just each other
I am from my Daddy's coal stained hands,
And his words that will forever linger in my mind- "Life's about doin' what you want."
